His brother’s subtle, conniving intelligence had met its match in his sister’s quicksilver, headstrongly courageous brilliance. She was a born strategist; she often seemed to know which action the Duke would take before he did. He would observe them coming to near-blows over some trivial point of interest and become captivated by the battle. What would it be like to charge ahead recklessly, to have that certainty? He ached to know. He tried to remedy his flaw, made endless resolutions to accept his own limitations, myriad as they were, but each was discarded in the heat of the moment. He set standards for himself, for he was supposedly infalliable, but time and again he betrayed them. Who could grant him absolution?
