Hold on to those you love, and treasure every moment, even the ones when they piss you off and you can't stand to see them. Because they are not eternally given to you.
Why so serious?
My first cousin was going home last night from work, and in a tragic accident, one of life's unpleasant little surprises, was badly injured and died a few hours later. We weren't terribly close, anymore, hadn't been for some years - not because we fell out or anything, just life got in the way and we had nothing all that much in common. But I miss him. No matter the situation, Brad had a funny story, or he'd just goof around until you were smiling again. Even if the story was at his own expense....and you could trust him with anything at all.
He was a good kid; not perfect - none of us are. He left behind a little girl who is thankfully too small to know what she's lost, the ex he couldn't quite exorcise from his heart, a heartbroken best friend, and of course his sister and parents and the rest of his family....we'll all miss him.
He was 25. That seems terribly young to be the oldest you'll ever get. I thought we were too young to die. Silly, I suppose....but it's true.
Live your life to the fullest. That was his philosophy. It's not a bad one, in reflection.
Also, I found this to be oddly comforting.

Ultimately, the message is upbeat, hopefully without coming across as too maudlin.
