If I hear one more commentator on the Royal Wedding expound upon the fact that our dear Kate is living "every little girls dream" I am going to SCUREEEAM!
Ask any little girl you know what her dream is when she grows up. You'll find a few who say they want to be a princess (and a few little boys too ;) )--but you'll also hear doctor, mommy, nurse, firefighter, writer, detective, president, soccer player, dancer, and a whole lot of more interesting and creative responses. My girlfriend confesses that she wanted to grow up to be Robin Hood or a pirate or in the army and to have a big handle bar mustache. And I am still anxiously awaiting the day that I will be as cool as Jo March...
Personally, I never dreamed of marrying a prince. In fact, I vividly remember at around age 5 explaining to my sister that you should only marry your true love--which meant that I was planning on marrying roast beef when I grew up. (Ahem...so food and I had an early and troublingly intimate relationship.) A little later I thought about marrying Danny Partridge or Nat from Little Men. And even later I didn't want to marry at all--but a roll in the hay with Frankenfurter seemed like a fine idea (hmmm...and now I love Adam Lambert, some things never change.) And then there were the many many girls and women I had crushes on -- and not for a single instance did I imagine being a princess. In fact, I always wished I were an athletic tom boy, witty and a little mysterious, or an incredible actress inspiring the crowds to spontaneously rise to their feet in applause instead of the dreamy, chatty, overweight bookworm who would grow up into a....dreamy, chatty, overweight bookworm.
That being said, I'm ok with the way things turned out. Think I'll go eat some roast beef.
