Hrrmph!

I'm single on Valentine's day. Hrrmph!

Being able to exchange cards with Wessex-lass last year was nice. Shame about the long-distance and other impediments.

Coupled with...
  •  further bone-headness from the accom-office
  •  a trip on the Bute stairs infront of not one, but two tour parties of prospective UGs (Negligible damage but embarrasing)

Actually, I first encountered the CGH when it was mentiond by that Iconoclast PJ O'Rourke. I thought he had British gamebirds all wrong at the time!
(Actually the only book of his I ever read, was badly "translocated" from the US to the UK - a joke about recognisably-Princeton students was told about Durham University - I think the publisher/editor hurridly decided that peeps at Britains (Arguably) 3rd-best Uni would have similar tastes to those at the USAs 3rd(Arguably) best school...)

For another view on current British cooking there's Delia Smith (who's worked for the Beeb (BBC) but who has her own web presence http://www.deliaonline.com/ ), Gary Rhodes, Rick Stein (seafood king), and Nigella Lawson.
For Olde-skool stuff there's :-
Clarissa Dickson-Wright (Old fashioned but contemporary; seems not to have heard of Cholesterol!)
Fanny Cradock (Tried to be "nouveau" in the 1950's - now dated)
"Mrs Beeton" - genuinely victorian!

If you have an advanced science degree, consider Heston Blumenthal - he's fairly mad though!

Google + Wikipedia should help you through that lot!
