Troubleshooting Monitors

My computer monitor won't turn on last night. It is about 5 years old so I was thinking maybe it was time for a new monitor. Let me check the wires first though, I'll just unplug this and....(computer turns off)

Winston: Oops, I'll just plug that back in

- Computer boots up automatically but the monitor still won't budge

Winston: I know, I'll plug the monitor plug from the computer...

- Computer turns off again

Winston: Err, I guess that's actually the power plug port on the computer side......I'm going to wait until morning to see if it fixes itself.

- I wake up, have breakfast and drink coffee. I have the house to myself every Thursday morning so it's a great feeling to be up. I pushed the power button on the monitor but still nothing happens

Winston: Man, monitors cost around $100, this is going to suck. I'm just going to switch out my monitor for my old one. (I had this old monitor since the 7th grade; back when I had windows 3.1)

- I tracked the powerplug to the correct socket in my surge protector but when I'm down there, I noticed that the fish tank filter wasn't running either. (my 10-gallon fish tank sits on my computer desk)

Winston: Umm....*lightbulb*

- I push the little red power button on the surge protector and everything up and running again

Winston: I guess I must have hit it with my toe last night, hehe. I think I'll apply for the School of Mines now.
