For challenge nine (
scenes & sequences) at
picspammy. I watched this movie prior to the challenge being issued and I just knew that this was the scene I wanted to picspam. It's a lovely heartfelt scene in a fantastic family film. I can't sing enough praises over his movie; it's full of humor, character growth, and family values.
As a bonus, there is a little Christian Kane surprise as he plays Young Hub.
[Walter puts blanket around Hub's shoulders and pushes him on the shoulder causing Hub to scream and turn around quickly.]
Hub (softly) What the hell? It's the middle of the night. What's the matter? What are you doing here?
Hub You got something to say to me? Spit it out.
Walter What happened to her, Uncle Hub? What happened to Jasmine? [Hub turns around] I have to know. I have to.
Hub She died. Died in childbirth. Her and the baby.
Walter What did you do?
Hub Went back to the only life I knew-back to the Legion. [flashback] For the next 40 years, there was always one more war to fight. [present day] Then I got old and came here. Here I am. [turns to face Walter] Here I am. You cold, son?
Hub You'd better... here. You'd better... you'd better go inside. Good boy, thank you. Good boy.
Walter Those stories about Africa... about you... they're true, aren't they?
Hub Doesn't matter.
Walter It does too. Around my mom all I hear is lies. I don't know what to believe in.
Hub If you want to believe in something, then believe in it. Just because something isn't true, that's no reason you can't believe it.
Hub Alright. There's a long speech I give to young men, sounds like you need to hear a piece of it. Just a piece. Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor... courage and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love... true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn't matter if it's true or not.
Hub You see, a man should believe in those things, because... those are the things worth believing in. Got that?
Walter That was a good speech.
Hub Think so? Thanks. Yeah...
Walter When are you going to give me the rest of the speech?
Hub When you're almost a man.
Walter You promise?
Hub Wait one minute here. Wait...
Walter I can't be a good man until you give me the rest of the speech, right? So you need to stick around until I'm old enough to hear the whole thing.
Hub I see what you're trying to pull here...
Walter No, you have to stick around until I'm old enough...
Hub I'll write it down.
Walter No! I want you to give me the speech!
Hub You won't be living here then.
Walter You're my uncle. I need you to stick around and be my uncle.
Walter What about Uncle Garth? He needs you. W-what about the dogs and the pig, and the lion? We all need you. I need you.
Hub No, you're just being silly.
Walter No, it's true!
Hub You're being silly.
Walter It's true!
Walter I know you miss Jasmine an awful, awful lot. But if you go, we'll miss you just as much. It's true.
Hub Alright, damn it, you win. I'll stick around and be your damn uncle. Don't expect me to be happy about it.
Hub Alright? Deal? [Walter suddenly hugs Hub] Oh-hh! Ohh, ohh. [Hub pats Walter's back] You're a good boy. (whispers) You're a good boy. You're a good boy.
