GI Joe: The Rise of COBRA

Well, it's not as bad as Transformers 2.

That's not even entirely a backhanded compliment, since Trans2 is SO breathtakingly bad that it becomes its own kind of wondrous phenomenon, while this movie is just...eh. But at least this one doesn't have boldly gratuitous racist stereotypes in it. (That *is* a backhanded compliment.)

Christopher Eccleston is, predictably, the most interesting thing in it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was clearly having a marvelous time, biting off enormous chunks of the scenery. Dennis Quaid's General Hawk is a cross between John Wayne and Harrison Ford. The Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow storyline is hackneyed but nicely done and Byung-hun Lee handles the absurdity of the endeavor with surprising gravity. The Paris sequence has a sort of ridiculous lunatic grace that I quite enjoyed.

The toy fanboy who made me see it giggled madly through it and said it had most of what he expected from it. I'm really glad we only paid matinee price, though.

Also: Why do live-action Hasbro toys apparently have a hardon for Egypt, and BIONIC TUNA! *snort*
