Seeing as I have to be back at work at 9 in the morning tomorrow in addition to the fact that I'm not much with the spending money currently, I decided to do something somewhat productive with my time. So I think to myself, what can I do that is productive. Well, crazy lady who is talking to herself, you want to go into one section or another of popular media as a profession... You should read what Theodor Adorno had to say about The Culture Industry. It's supposed to be a significant text, or something like that. So that Is just what I have been doing, and let me just tell you...
It sucks.
Wait, thats not fair. It's very clever and manipulative in it's own right. He offers some great examples of the self perpetuating cycle. It's just that I'm pretty sure that there are some faulty assumptions at the base of his argument... I just can't seem to pinpoint them at present. Maybe it's just my inherent distrust of anything that is put forth in such a fashion that I have to force myself to second guess what he is saying. In addition, I'm aggravated by language choices. Tell me, Why would anyone use the word "inchoate" when we have this lovely (just as effective) word "incipient"?
Anyway, right now I am just going through and making sure that I'm reading him straight. It wouldn't do for me to form any opinions based off of a faulty understanding of the essay. Once I'm through the entire thing 3 times or so, I'll have a personal response to post to it.
And yes, this is my idea of a good time. What of it! :-P
