I think text over people's faces looks great. It's just another way of doing things.
IDK, ever since I saw the poster for The Social Network I've been kind of obsessed with text over the subject.

Ok, I admit - the poster looks really good. But I have yet to see someone actually pull it off on an icon. So far I've only seen icons where the text either totally obscures the subject or is made so tiny that you can barely see/read it.

Yeah, I think it's a size issue. Posters are large and have more vertical space, whereas things can get a little squirrel-y in a small 100x100 square.

That said, I'm still a fan (but I like when things are obscured and I don't mind unreadable text). :)

Yeah... to be honest, I get the feeling bad text trends like these start when elite makers who aren't very good with text lay out their text in godawful ways and then people think it's elite so they start doing it too. NO.
