GUTS - an anon concrit meme

Jan 15, 2011 00:01

Let's have a meme to get the ball rolling at this community.
Graphic makers want to receive good, honest concrit to help them improve, but people don't like to give concrit because pointing out other's mistakes is a sensitive topic, specially among friends - and because it almost always makes them sound like bitches. And who wants that? People ( Read more... )

I'm asocialdevice and my icon comm is kigurumisisters. I share this comm with another user, please only look/crit my posts. : ) <3

Here's a few examples, the first five are in my usual style and so what I believe to be some of my "best" work and the other five are me expirementing with new styles, just trying something diffrent. It's these in particular that I'm looking for critique in, however I'd also love some crit on my usual style. I'm comfortable in it, sure, but I'm scared I'm getting too comfortable. :) Thanks to all.

I think I did come across your icon community once and I do remember your TBBT icons cause they have this distinctive solid background colour with that rounded cutout thing. I do like that style because I find it bright and cheery and fitting for the show. I dont think there's anything wrong with sticking to the style, but I think mixing it up is essential. Maybe you could try using texture. Texture often enhances a picture as well as gives it depth. I know you do use textures - (forgive me, I didnt see all of your posts cause I was getting confused with what I wanted to say )but it wouldn't hurt to use a combination of them and try different modes like hardlight , inverting them etc etc. Sometimes, experimenting with modes throws up unusual results and most times, pleasing to the eye too ( ... )

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the crit, it was far kinder than I expected and extremely helpful! I'm totally running off to expirement with modes n textures in PS. Aiming to do more daring things.

Again, thank you very much. :)

I think your icons are creative. I think the colors are bright and the pictures are clear.

The only thing I'd suggest is toning down the red in the 9th picture just a smidge. Also the color inside the black and white I would maybe soften the b&w so that the color stood out a bit more. Overall your work is amazing and creative so I feel nit-picky with my suggestions lol :)

I do pretty simple icons, mostly just some coloring, occasional textures or text. I made years ago and took a long (3 year) break and recently started posting icons again... Icons are posted at my community luvforever_icon

From these icons, I'd say you have a really good sense of cropping, all of these icons are interesting to look at when it comes to the positioning of the subjects on them. The cropping on number six is lovely, but be careful to watch your lines for oversharpening (her hands, the inner right door post ( ... )

I think your biggest benefit could be a little bit more contrast (particularly in icons 3, 5, 8 & 10). Just punch up those colors a little bit, and you'll have loads more depth to your icons.

Your cropping is lovely, especially in 2, 5, and 6 (looooove 6), and the colors in 4 and 6 looks just about perfect to me. 6 is perhaps a bit on the yellow side, but I think it fits with the icon.

9 to me is a little pink in the face and a little bland otherwise. I think some minor color adjustment (selective coloring/color balance/your preferred method of choice) could work wonders here.

Overall, I think your simple style is lovely and after checking out your journal a bit I really LOVE your True Blood icons. The coloring/crop/sharpness/everything is pitch perfect in this one here. Keep up the excellent work!

Props on working with so many different fandoms and different sorts of images! Also, kudos on trying out all sorts of crops rather than the straightforward center crop, which I tend to get stuck doing! Cartoons aren't always easy to color, but you did a lovely job with that Mulan piece. I think #9 could be improved with a little more vibrance, so that the colors pop more.

hello, i'm afeastforme and i post my icons over turnleft_icons.

These examplese are what i judge the "good" part on my new path in icon-making, in the last months i complitely changed my vision of "icon" and i moved from my confortable zone. Since it's a recent move, i really need to know if i'm going somewhere good or just making crap.
I don't want to go back on making icons that are too boring. Thank you for reading and taking time to critic (*_*)b

I like almost all these icons except #2 and #9, I feel the textures on these two don't do anything to complement the women's faces or make the icon better in any way, or art-ier, like #10. I think my fav icon is the Rose icon, #8

First of all, I really like your use of negative space. I think icons six-nine are all stunning in both colouring and cropping. The use of text on number six really makes the icon special as well ( ... )

I really love your use of negative space and close-up crops. I also really love your coloring/style though I think there are a few areas where it's a bit overkill and you lose the subject of your icon a bit. Particularly in icons 6 and 8. I think if you upped the contrast on the layers with your subjects on them, you could fix this problem really easily.

The majority of your icons look nice a crisp on my screen (aside from 3, which it seems like that might be the style you were going for) and none seem oversharpened, which is great to see.

I think my favorite of this batch is 4, I think you've done wonders in combating the busy background. Your eye is drawn straight to the subjects and your coloring style really suits this photo (makes it look kind of retro-y and awesome)

Hopefully that was helpful in some way!
