Okay, so I didn't include any of this batch in the last concrit post, but these are some of my most recent work:
Well, technically this batch was made before the last concrit post too, but these have all been made in 2015 and I think they're somewhat better than most icons i've made prior to this year so I think it'd be useful to get concrit on them too.
It's a mix of my favourites & ones I am not perfectly happy with but can't really tell why (#3, #9, #10)

(disclaimer: this is half the batch oops because it was a 20in20 but the rest of it is here if you need/want more to critique ??)

Hey! So, icon three seems too sharpened and IMO, too pale, but that's a personal preference. By sharpening less in her face, Marion would still stand out but it wouldn't be as edged and sharp. But, I do love your use of the far crop. Since you were supposed to make it a muted colored icon (ugh, I didn't see that until I remade the icon), you could bring up the brightness a little and make the icon muted instead of dreary.
RN, the icon looks more dark than muted so here's what I did to change that:

->

Here's what I did when I remade it:
original to remake

->

I duplicated the original icon and blurred it using the smart blur tool thingy and set it to 48%.

->

Then I stamped the layers and set the stamped layer to soft light @ 100%

->

I then colored the icon.

->
->

I added a texture by drankmywar. The texture was inverted, desaturized and then set to overlay.

->
->

I lost a bit of the sharpness in her face so I stamped the layers, added a paint daubs filter (all fields set to 1) and then set it to a 19% opacity.

->
->

Here's the final!!

I hope this helps a little!

It actually hadn't even dawned on me to colour with a multiply layer, so this helps a lot!!
I'm really excited to make my next batch now and play with it.

And yeah, I made it kind of dreary because I wasn't sure the lighter look was as muted, but looking at it compared to the full colour, it definitely still qualifies, and fixes the issue I was having with the icon, thanks!

Yeah, I actually color with my layers set to overlay and then change the opacity as necessary! Definitely play with it - it really works well!

Part 2: Icon 7 + 9 concrit slytheringurrl February 19 2015, 03:14:36 UTC
I'm just going to talk about icon 9 since I'm lazy, lol :)

I think that instead of screening light textures, try to make your icons pop out more.

->

As you can see, I tried to make her dress pop out more and make the boy's (god, I always forget his name. Roran? IDK. Baby Robin will work.) clothes also accented.

For icon 7, maybe a center crop would bring more attention to Marion. Also, again, the screened light texture makes her face also too blurry and out of focus and really what's grabbing my attention is the trees.

->
I love the way you added the stock texture though!

IDK if this is allowed but here are the psd's for the two icons that I remade in case you want to see what I did exactly.
icon 7 psd | icon 9 psd

I hope this helps you!
