Okay, hopefully traffic will pick up by tomorrow night because, you guys, I am ready to get my concrit on! In the meantime, I have two icons I'm waffling about that I would lovelovelove to get some feedback on:
Haha, I think you did fine for your first time! Thank you very much for doing my the honor. :D
#1: Regarding the centering of images, I totally see what you mean. It was cropped from something larger so it wasn't a problem until it got smaller, haha. I think, when I was making it, I was thinking that even though Castiel's wings take up most of the image, Castiel himself is sitting on the righthand side of the icon. So there was a balance for me. I think I might go in and fill the smudged space around Anna up and see if that makes any difference in the balance of the icon.
#2: You know...it might be all the yellow's fault. Now that you point it out it seems so out of place. I'll give that a go and see what happens.
For #1, the image quality looks great and I love the contrasting color scheme. The issue I have is the same as the person above me. Anna's face looks too bright and I think the same for Castiel's body. My eye immediately goes to look at his shirt because of the extreme brightness which is a weird focal point. So darkening those areas somehow would look better, in my opinion.
For #2, I love this one. I like the crop and the purple/yellow color scheme a whole lot. The only issue I see is his hair. It looks purple on my monitor (I know the rest of the icon has purple as well but his hair looks strange to me) so maybe using selective color to make it darker would help with that.
Thank you for taking the time to give me critique! I appreciate it!
In #1 those were the spots I was most worried about, so yeah, I'll probably try and tone them down a tad.
And in #2 his hair does look purple, you are right. Although, I am a fan of using coloring to make hair weird colors. In this case, though, I think you're right in pointing it out. Darkening his hair so it goes back to the darker brown would probably balance the coloring out a little more. :D
ME TOO. Because I always assume there's going to be a ~deeper meaning~ to things that are done to an image. In this case, you're correct! Though this was cropped form a larger graphic, the intention was definitely to give that supernatural, angelic, made of light so bright it'll burn your eyes out of their sockets effect to them both. These two images, imo, are Anna and Castiel looking their most angelic (um, the SPN connotations of angelic apply here, lol) so I wanted to emphasize that. I think everyone else is picking up on the fact that it seems overwhelming in a smaller space. Although...that could kinda of be the impression I should make, huh? because they so would be.
I LIKE TALKING ABOUT THE WHY OF THINGS, CLEARLY. But, honestly, this was kind of a fun comment to read because you've pointed out all of the things that I was intentionally trying to do. And also kind of reassured me because I'm identifying Cas by his wings and Anna by her hair = awesome
( ... )
I would say that with Castiel, his entire body glows, whereas with Anna, only part of her does THIS IS A VERY GOOD POINT. Actually that alone would probably throw the balance off (and consequently make other issues stand out even more). I'll work on that for sure.
#2: That was definitely my train of thought, so yes. I'll mess around with the contrast and see what happens.
1) I agree with the poster below: those caps are VERY hard to work with. You've really done something nice here, with the added glow effect on the angels. I think I would have liked to have seen something that would have connected the two images a bit more. One is very cool-colored and the other, very warm-colored. I'm not sure what would pull both images to make it more composite, but it should use something to put the two together, rather than just lying on top of each other. Still, nice coloring and great usage of a hard screencap.
2) This is.. .Glee, right? Just wondering for my own curisoity. ;) Anyway, I like the crop and the background texture works great (creates a curtain effect for the subject), but the middle area seems diluted, and a sharper/more contrasted layer might pump that area up. The coloring is unique; nice to see.
#1: You know, I am kind of the same way. A lot of times when I use this effect on an icon, I'll take the final, flip it, and do borders (so the red of Anna's image would outline the side of Castiel's and vice versa). I might do that to even things out a bit. It'll probably help some of the focus issues that are suddenly glaringly obvious to me...
#2: YUP. It is Glee. The middle area of the curtain? Yeah, it is a little washed out. Someone above suggested toning down the yellow at the top so I might do that, I think.
Thank you for taking the time to give me feedback. I appreciate it. ♥
I was nervous about giving any concrit at all, as my own work is... lackluster. But glad you thought it was OK. They were done well, really. I liked them. BTW - Love that Rory icon! ♥
1. I love the super contrasted color, it works so well with the composition. However I think the lightning on Cas and Anna is a bit too overpowering. I would try toning it down a tad - or use a softer color than white for the lightning, such as a soft beige/rosé.
2. I think again that the lightning is a bit too strong. I'd erase the white soft light layer (?) over his face and maybe the jacket, then his face will stand out more against the background. I think that this is maybe why you feel the coloring falls flat - the white light is washing out color of his face. But otherwise I think it's a great icon!
Don't worry, it's not bad. It's just something you might wanna play around with and see what happens. But hell, I go over the top with such things all the time, too.

But all in all I think they are really good.
