Yeah, I'm always looking to expand my texture collection, so what I tend to do is browse through other people's resource lists and then look through them; it especially works if you like the textures a particular iconmaker uses a lot, because then you can try to find the ones they use (or even ask where they got their textures from).
What I usually do with a dark one is first use Auto Level on it (and Auto Color too, if you don't like what Auto Level alone did). Then I put a Bright Blue Fill Layer (something around #0d19bf, though it doesn't have to be that exact color) and set it to Exclusion 100% over the Auto Leveled base (set at Normal). Over this I put the base at Color 100%. Over this I either do the base Screen 100% or, if the result is TOO washed out, Overlay (100% at first, but I'll lower that after the next layer). If I do Screen, I then do Pin Light 100% over that; if Overlay, I put Screen (and tweak the % according to the icon). Usually the Screen-Pin Light combo works best on live action subjects (example here vs the base); the Overlay-Screen combo I use more for anime subjects. If I don't like how the Overlay-Screen combo looks, I'll put another base layer on top, and just search through the options until I find a look I like.
OH! Also, if Overlay looks too sharp, I may go with Soft Light instead; it all depends on what you like and how dark the base was to begin with ^^ Likewise, I sometimes choose Lighten instead of Screen for the Overlay-Screen combo.
