The torn paper effect is probably a texture with a black background set to screen.

Are you sure? 'Cause I'm positive I've seen it in use for a 1024x768 wallpaper. Maybe it's really big and resized? D: Do you have any idea where I can find it?

this tutorial and this tutorial are really great for getting the smooth blending thing you're talking about. also, the examples you gave from i^am^me are pretty texture-heavy which probably contribute to how smooth and seamless the blending looks?? i'm pretty awful with textures personally, but she seems pretty expert at using them. <3 hope those help, anyway.

as for the banners.
it could be stock or filtering.
you should check paint-pops.net
they are many tutorials for that kind of effect.
but the easiest way is to find some good stock and play around with it.
that's what i always do.hope this help you.
