Channel Mixer?

So a bunch of tutorials use the channel mixer and I can follow by just plugging in numbers, but I don't actually know how this works.
Are there any tutorials out there that actually explain WHAT the channel mixer is?
I've tried experimenting with it but I don't really get it.
