To make this icon *points*, I used the magic wand to select the white background of the image, made a new layer, then inversed the selection and flooded the selection with black. Then I copied that onto a blank 100x100 canvas and sized it down-- the anti-aliasing smoothed out the edges of the outline. Then I used a lot of brushes and textures and stuff to make it pretty. :D
Making an iPod would be the work of a few moments with the shapes tool and a 1 pixel brush for the earbud wires.
I don't think that my method would work on an image with low contrast between subject and background, but it was fairly quick and simple for the dark-on-white Get A Mac commercials.
