I can only see the last image but I'll try and explain. This is how I do it and I'm simple when it comes to icons.
Get your canvas how ever you want it. You have three options.
Multiply base --> Move the duplicated layer to where over the icon you want it. --> Then use the eraser tool to get rid unwanted parts of the item
If you want you can, after you've erased the parts you want set the top layer to normal, if it's a darker image I usually screen. Also, making the top layer and making it black and white makes a good effect.
I can't say I care for the effect, but to get it, I would do the erasing part of what has been described to you by adding a mask to the top layer, and erasing with a brush set to a grey tone.
