The Office Header and Icon: PS7 selective coloring and desaturation.

How to go from this to this

I also made an icon with different original colorings but the same settings for the header image to show how the settings look on another image.

This is tutorial is image heavy and uses PS7. I have no idea if it will translate to PSP or other programs (sorry!). Please do not use the final image without asking, since it's my new header image and all. Photos from: http://mtt.just-once.net/.

If anything is unclear, please just ask! Enjoy!

1. I cut out the part I wanted (everything but the text) and pasted it to a new image. Then I went to Image-Image Size and selected Width-70% (make sure you have "Constrain Proportions" selected)

You should have this:

2. Create a new Selective Color layer. Either go to Image-Adjustments-Selective Color or (this is what I did) on the Layers palette click on the half black and half white icon and go to Selective Color.

3. Selective Color settings:
Reds:
+32
-33
-33
-61

White:
-6
0
0
-19

Neutrals:
+16
0
-11
0

Blacks:
+11
0
+8
0

It should look like this:

4. Go to Filter-Sharpen-Unsharpen Mask. Settings should be:
Amount: 50%
Radius: 2 pixels
Threshold: 5 levels

5. Go to Image-Duplicate Layer

6. On the duplicate layer, go to Image-Adjustments-Desaturation. Change the layer opacity to Soft Light, 85%. You should get this:

7. Duplicate the background image and set the layer to Overlay, 75%. You should now have this:

8. Duplicate your background image again. Go to Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur. Set the Radius to 1.1 pixels. You should now have this:

and this is what your layers palette should look like at this point:

9a. I went to Layer-Flatten Image.
9b. I made a new image file, 600x300 pixels.
9c. I dragged the header image onto the black image file and moved it around until I got it right where I wanted it. This is what you should see:

10. Text: the font I used is called "American Typewriter" which was a default font on my computer. The text for "have to catch a train..." settings are:
Size: 14
Leading: 8pt
Kerning: 50
Crisp.

I also added a few extra spaces between 'to' and 'work' because the white text was blending in with Michael's shirt.

"It's Just Another Manic Monday" is in all caps, same font. The settings are the same except the size is 25 and the kerning is 25.

10. For the dashes I just made a new text layer and set it to:
Chicago (again, default font)
Size 24
Leading: 8pt
Kerning: 25
Crisp
.... then I typed a bunch of dashes below 'manic monday' until I got the length I wanted. Then I duplicated that layer and moved the new layer above the text.

Final Image:

I also made this icon:
from this except that I changed the opacity on the gaussian blur layer from 100% to 50%.
