I don't understand how to make the greyscale layers. I use PSPX.

Okay. So you duplicated you layer and while you have it selected, hit shift and H at the same time. A little Hue/Saturation/Lightness thing should pop up, drag the Saturation bar all the way down to the bottom. Hit okay and you should be done. =]
