what are the brush extentions (they should be .abr)?

ok, then you've got brushes made with a higher version of PS. use the program jessicamariek has linked to below. you can create and image pack from the abr file and then use your version of PS to create an abr file you can use. :-)

Try this. You can save the images to make the brushes.

also when you get "not compatible" it could also mean that brushes were made in a higher verison of photoshop then what you have. And that is why its not working.

Is the abr viewer mentioned above the only one around? I tried it once and could never get it to work. Something about failure to initialize.

i'd guess it's because you don't have the .NET framework 2.0 installed on your computer. it's supposed to be part of winXP but i didn't have it on mine (and i run XP pro). you can get it from microsoft windows updates.

Ahhhhh. I thought that might be it. I'm using winXP Home. Obviously it doesn't have it either. I'm always leary of updates like this. Never know when it might screw other things up. It's happened before. 8(

yeah, i don't trust old billy boy and his tinkering any further than i can throw him. i just did the 'custom' option and only installed the .NET part. the .NET framework is supposed to be part of the XP OS...but maybe it's something that has to be installed seperately? *is clueless* anyway, i needed it for another program a friend of mine wrote for saving PM's from our php message board.
