I use Photoshop.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some tutorials where you can outline a picture? Thanks in advance.

Example.

I think you just blow it up a bit, do it by hand, then paste the image onto a new bg..

Mmm, don't know a tut, but in photoshop basically you just use the lasso tool or another selecting tool you're comfortable with, select the people/thing/whatever you want to use on your icon, make a new layer out of the part you selected, go to blending options (rightclick on the layer in the layer palette) and "stroke". 4 pixels is a decent size of stroke for this type of icon.

Help for the things you're asking about can be found in the community memories. Also, it's helpful if you tell us what program you use to make icons so folks answering questions can tailor their answers to your needs.

I looked in the memories myself and was having trouble finding things, too, so I did some digging and came up with some links.

Curvy dotted lines:
How to make dotted lines in Photoshop
A comment I wrote about how to use the Pen tool in Photoshop to get curvy lines
Outlining a figure in an image:
Stroke a selection
Stroke an object on a layer

Of those four links only the last one came from the memories, so don't feel bad about not finding stuff. :)

I like to use the pen tool with the background color turned off. Much easier than using the lasso tool.

Maybe try using the eraser? Erase the colored background around the edges of the picture.
