How to go from
to
in Photoshop CS

1) Prepare your base. I like to sharpen once or twice depending on the icon and then take the blur tool at 50% to blur the skin.

2) Duplicate your base and drag it to the top. Set at screen 50%.

3) Duplicate your base again and drag it to the top. Set to soft light 50%.

4) Exclusion layer time! Make a new layer and flood fill it with #030437. Set to exclusion 100%.

5) Make a new layer and flood fill with #FFDFAD. Set to multiply 100%.

6) Make a new layer and fill with this mask
. Set to screen 100%.

7) Next I took this brush
. I took a color from the icon (#D7B99D) and placed the brush on the top left and the bottom right corners.

8) Using the same color I took this
text brush and put it on the top right. I set it to hard light 80%.

9) Duplicate the text brush layer. Desaturate and set to screen 80%.

10) Take this
text brush and place beneath the picture. Set to hard light 70%.

11) Create a gradient map. To do this, you must make an adjustment layer. It is the button at the bottom of the layer palette with the circle that is half black and half white. Click "gradient map" and choose the black and white gradient. Set to normal 30%.

And then you're finished!
