Icon Tutorial #02 - Angelina Jolie

May 06, 2005 13:29

This is my second tutorial, so I hope it is easy enough.

Today, we will make this.

With PS7, but I'm sure it is easy to translate.

I am starting with this picture of Angelina Jolie.

I crop it and resize it to 100x100.

As I almost always do, I make an auto-contrast ( Image - adjustement - Auto contrast )

The image is too blurry, so I go to Filter - Sharpen - Unsharp Mask. I play around with the numbers until I get something I like ( for this one, amount 70%, radius 2, treshold 2. )

Just to make the skin look a little more soft, I used the blur tool with a 25% strengh on the skin.

As you can see it didn't change a lot, but the skin was already soft looking.

I create a new layer, fill it with dark blue ( for example, 00024B ) and put it at 35% overlay.

So I duplicate the layer, sharpen it a little, and set it on soft light.

I create a new layer and fill it with this gradient

Which is a normal FFCCCC to DBD1B9 gradient. I set it on soft light.

Then I make a new layer and use this texture in it ( made by myself )

Set it on soft light, again.

Then I make a new layer for this texture, made by me, again.

Set it on soft light, 50%.

I make a new layer and make a border with the line tool, weight = 3 px. using the color 9F2722. I make a gaussian blur of 2 on it, then set it on screen.

Then, I make a new layer, hit crtl + a to select all, go to select - modify - border and put 1, then hit enter. And I fill the border in white. Then I go to select - inverse and hit delete a few times until I get what I want. And I set the layer opacity to 50%.

Then it's time for the text. I decided to use the color 9F2722, in time new romans, size 10. Text I used is -facepalm-.

I thought the text looked odd, and after playing around with it a little, I decided to move it under the last texture layer. I thought it was looking better.

There! I hope you enjoy, comments would be very appreciated, and I'd love to see what you do with the tutorial.. Also please don't copy the exact icon. Try to find your own picture and adapt the tutorial to it. :)

Anyway. As I said, comments are appreciated.
