i hadn't thought of pasting it onto a new canvas, but i just tried that and it did lower the kb however it's still over 40kb.

how would i go about checking the dpi?

i'm not sure if it's relevant, but when i open a new canvas this is what comes up:

Resolution is the DPI (dots per inch). On this canvas the resolution is 118.11, change the resolution to 72, it should make the kbs lower. Try it and let me know.

Try making it a jpeg instead of a png, that should definitely work.

Your resolution is set for printing, not saving for the web. 118.11 pixels/centimeter equals 300 pixels/inch. Your resolution should be 72 pixels/inch or, if you keep it set for centimeters, 28 pixels/centimeter.
