getting higher-quality looking gifs

I just started making animated gifs. I'm using the lastest version of VLC player to auto cap and Photobie to make the animated gifs. The quality is not coming out good though.

I saved the caps as .pngs. Don't know if that may be the problem. The gifs are also too big to my liking. Is there a way to make VLC player capture smaller caps?
