I was wondering if anybody knew how to achieve this effect

That´s achieved when you make a gif with 2 or 3 (could be more) photos taken at the same moment from slightly different angles (positions).
It could also be taken with the same camera, for example, in different moments, from slightly different positions if you´re able to maintain the same conditions. (light, the subject not moving, etc).
It´s the same principle used for E!´s glam cam. LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHHDGhOJDlg Or those famous Matrix shots in which they used like 150 cameras, if I´m not wrong... :)
