Basically, this icon here I made was insipred by b/w pictures. So, I will giving you a detailed explanation on how to achieve the final outcome. Pardon for my poor english(though its my first language).

Photoshop CS2, Gradient map, Hue/Sat, Brightness/Contrast, Curve, Textures.

Step 1.

We will start off with any picture of your favorites. Sharpen it.

Step 2.
Do a black and white gradient map.
Why? Because for a nostalgic feel, a black and white is often preferred. So a gradient map will turn it into black and white.

Step 3.
Do a Hue/Sat layer with the settings as Lightness: -86.
This is to turn the background(not the focal) into black but with a little shade of the former background still left.
After, mark out your focal and use the soft brush eraser to erase the focal. Using smaller opacity everytime you erase.

Step 4.
Do a brightness/contrast with settings as brightness: -18 and contrast: 1.
This is to darken the parts which were previously black so as to hide it. We only need the face.

Step 5.
Do a curve layer at 48, 31 and 73, 67.
This step is to further contrast the focal with the background as previously it didnt stand out.

Step 6.

I used this. Set it to lighten and erase parts that block your focal.

Done.
My 7th tutorial.
