-Really long; 18 easy steps :)
-Translatable
-Made using Photoshop CS2
-Uses Channel Mixer, Curves, Photo Filters, Fill Layers, etc.
-I'd really like some feedback!
-Let's get started.
Key:
L: Layer (this is on the top toolbar, along with File, Edit, etc.)
NAL: New Adjustment Layer (it'll come up underneath the Layer tab)
First things first, the first result:
I'm going to be using
this picture from Supernatural Season 2, Episode 3: Bloodlust. Supernatural pictures tend to be dark and hard to work with, so we need to start by brightening it up a bit.
1) Curves layer (L>NAL>Curves)
RGB: 1st point:
Input: 119
Output: 156
2nd point:
Input: 189
Output: 197
Next, we're going to add some color.
2) #290000 set to Exclusion 100%.
I wanted it to stand out more, I didn't like the car (their AMAZING, amazinggg car) to blend in with the scenery, to just look bland, so I added some Saturation. This may vary with each picture, so if your picture has a lot of prominent Reds, lower the Saturation for it, same with the others.
3) H/S layer (L>NAL>Hue/Saturation)
Master Sat: +18
Reds Sat: +18
Cyans Sat: +28
Again, I wanted to add more color. Also, I like using Exclusion layers to my advatage. Usually they throw me off, but if you coordinate them right, they turn out well.
4) #12001a set to Exclusion 100%.
I liked the blue sky in the background, hence the only output channel I used was blue.
5) Channel Mixer layer (L>NAL>Channel Mixer)
Output Channel: Blue
-12 / -12 / +112 / +4
I really don't know what to say here, I was just fooling around, but it looked nice :)
6) Levels layer (L>NAL>Levels)
Channel: RGB
Input: 14 / 1.17 / 235
Output: 32 / 248
I absolutely love using this type of Fill Layer. Even a light pink or light orange looks great when set to Color Burn.
7) #e9ebff set to Color Burn 100%.
Its a little too worn out for my taste, so I needed to add some Contrast.
8) B/C layer (L>NAL>Brightness/Contrast)
B: +6
C: +12
This adds a nice flair to the picture. You could also use a tad lighter or darker gray depending on your picture.
9) #242424 set to Lighten 100%.
This makes it a little darker, but it also gives it a little bit of color, but from the picture itself.
10) Duplicate the base layer, bring it to the top and set it to Luminosity 44%.
Since that made it darker, we need to brighten it just a little bit.
11) Duplicate that Luminosity layer and set it to Screen 17%.
This is going to add some more color, because its still a little too bland for me.
12) Photo Filter layer (L>NAL>Photo Filter)
Warming Filter (85): Density 25%
Same thing as the last.
13) Photo Filter layer (L>NAL>Photo Filter)
Deep Yellow: Density 12%
I like adding an innocent shade of pink to every picture.
14) #ffeff8 set to Multiply 100%.
Another Exclusion layer, just fading it a bit more.
15) #00041e set to Exclusion 100%.
Now to brighten up the fade, but leave the nice color. . .
16) B/C layer (L>NAL>Brightness/Contrast)
B: +9
C: +12
Now let's add a pretty texture made by (???)
17) Add
this texture, set it to Darken 100%.
18) Alright, let's sharpen your picture (if it needs it, in this case, mine did, because I had to resize it). Sharpen only the base layer, don't fade the sharpen (since you have your base above it a couple times) unless its way too sharp.
Now for the second result...
Do all the steps in the first result, but after step 16, before you add the texture, add this step:
19) Channel Mixer layer (L>NAL>Channel Mixer)
Output Channel: Red
+88, -2, +2, -6
Output Channel: Green
-6, +96, +2, +2
Output Channel: Blue
-4, +4, +118, -4
Then add the texture. Also, if you need to adjust the texture to fit your picture, go right ahead. Any tinkering with this tutorial is fine, as long as you don't copy it or something :)
Thanks for taking the time to do this big long tutorial! Hope you liked it, and I LOVE seeing results, so don't hesitate to post! :)
