I absolutely love Cambria. It comes default with most computers. Simple and elegant!

i am sick of cliche fonts.

I think defaults are foolproof, the worse thing you can have on an icon is some fancy script font that nobody can read.

Do you think it's better to use the more popular fonts or just whatever seems more fitting for the icon?

This question answers itself. Seriously. Do you see where you said "whatever seems more fitting for the icon"? Yeah. Read that bit again and think about it.

And fontsquirrel.com has a TON of fantastic free fonts that are great for icons. Also, if you look through fontaddicts, you'll find not only popular fonts but a lot of more obscure ones that are pretty great.

My standbys are Georgia, Garamond, Futura, Helvetica (or, if you don't have it... Arial), 078MKSD, 1942 Report, Cairo, Charter, Clarendon, Fertigo, Labtop, and Typo Slab Serif.

And on fonts looking good - it's rarely the font you use that makes or breaks the icon, but more often how you use it. Don't do ugly stuff.

Good site rec, thanks.

Also, major cringe at "(or, if you don't have it... Arial)." I haaate Arial, I can usually tell when someone uses it instead of Helvetica.
