Jul 01, 2017 15:12

July 1st means it's time for round 9 of Ask the Maker here at icon_talk!

Here you'll get the chance to ask icon makers who sign up questions about their icons and other graphics. You can ask for tutorials, guides/"How to", or ask any other questions related their work so these makers can create a Q&A post with the answers to all the questions they get. As ( Read more... )

Ask everyone general questions about iconmaking. Or you're wondering about a certain technique and the makers of the icons you have as examples are no longer on LJ, you can post those icons and ask for tips on how to achieve it (DO NOT ask for a complete recreation like the same image, crop). You can ask for texture, font, text recommendation and icon inspiration (credit the makers) and anything else you can think of. Everyone who wants to, can ask and answer and contribute to the conversations in this thread.

You can link to already made tutorials, you can write tutorials (again, do not completely recreate other peoples icons) and you can write your tips and tricks out in the comments, or just carry out conversations sharing your opinions, techniques and advice about all things icon making.

I'd like some tutorials on making complex icons (ones that incorporate textures, text etc), and blending multiple images into the one icon.

jsfunction did a great tutorial using textures here.

Here is one that uses two images from naive_astronaut

If anyone's got a tutorial on how to use the pen tool to make cut-outs, I'd greatly appreciate it. I usually just paint over the background (I know, lol) but I wanna try and make my cut-outs a bit better, detail wise, and I hear the pen tool is the best way to do it but I just cannot figure out how to use that thing for the life of me. Thanks!

Not sure about the pen tool but I wrote a bit on using the Free Lasso tool and then a very small eraser brush here & here if that helps?

Thank you so much! I'm gonna experiment with this some more - I played with it the other day, and the lasso tool was being stubborn for me so I had to take a step back, lol. The very small eraser brush is a great trick to clean everything up, though!

I use something called the Free Select Tool in GIMP. I usually do this on the full sized image because it makes it look a lot cleaner and precise on the finished icon. I assume this is similar to the Lasso tool in PS.

I reccomend giving the tool about 0.8 Feathering. I've found this keeps the shape from looking too sharp/pixilated in the finished product. The hardest part is circular shapes because the tool is all straight lines. Scrolling in REALLY close helps a lot. After I've connected the shape, I cut/paste it back onto the canvas and then delete the old background layer.

Once the image is extracted, I save it so that I can make more icons with the same image without needing to do the work more than once.

Thanks for this! I've never used GIMP before, but I downloaded this to give it a try and it works pretty well! For some reason, I can work with this tool better than PS' lasso tool, lol. It does pretty good with more intricate details like hair, which is what I was looking for. (Of course, sometimes there's no hope for getting the hair to look perfect if your subject's hair is especially messy, but doing the cut out on the full sized image like you suggested makes it so you can't tell tiny parts of the original background are still there, so I'm happy with it!)

Oh, I have a great trick for the tiny parts where the background color are still showing!

Just select those areas with the lasso tool (or whatever) and then use the hue/saturation tool to adjust the color to something closer to their hair color. It does wonders.
