i'd love to see how you did this, the texture work is really amazing:

+1 on the text guide/font recommendations. I especially love your use of scripty fonts like in these:

Will definitely do the text guide (working on it between other things), about that icon tho, most of those effects were achieved with brushes, I can upload those for you if you like to try those out because I checked the psd and I worked on a single layer so there's not really much to say except "I threw brushes using the colour picker to get colors". Let me know if you want them then I'll upload! (I forgot, the only texture I've actually used is this one here so no big deal)

oooh brushes...i don't really use them much lol but i'll give it a whirl! and it's amazing you did all that in a single layer!

any tips for using brushes with a mouse though? i imagine it will be easier to control it with a tablet which is why i've never really touched them beyond painting in colors and layer masks haha, thanks so much!

I wasn't either before the tablet, but now they're a part of my way-to-go! I've uploaded them here and they should work with any ps after cs4 (if not let me know, I've cs6).

Best option I can think of is to set both Size and Opacity jitter on "fade" instead of pen pressure. You might have to play with the "minimum" a bit because that's what really does the job, but you should be able to come up with something interesting. Also, if a brush has the "double brush" thing active, leave it on, it's the texturey-effect some brushes have. In the file you'll find a few brushes but on dA there are quite a lot that might work, especially if you seek out the "enviroment" ones!
