[#88] Why you should watch...
Another challenge for tvrealm.

So this is the basic story, as told in the very first episode "The Red Serpent".
This long-haired dude is, uhm, an unnamed Thracian. He and the men from his village were approached by the Romans, in form of Legatus Claudius Glaber. Rome was marching against the Getae and because they fairly regularly raided Thracian villages Glaber persuades the Thracians to march with him and his men.
Our Thracian bids goodbye to his loving wife Sura and goes to war. I censored this part. Too early for so much nudity.
Everything goes well, as well as wars can go. Enter Ilithyia, Glaber's wife. And she is all: "You are SO HOT AND MANLY when you command armies. You know what would turn me on even more? You forgetting about this silly little war against the Getae and leading your army against the big bad Mithridates in Asia!! That would be EVEN MORE HOT AND MANLY. It would be so hot that I would have to drop my fur coat and shag you right on top of that desk over there!" And Claudius is all like: "Sure, sure. LET'S GET IT ON!" *coat, is dropped*
The nameless Thracian is not cool with this turn of events, so he leads a little mutiny against Glaber and his men and runs off towards home.
And just in time because those pesky Getae are at it again and a few of them are chasing his lovely Sura. But our Thracian is having none of that and the love birds are reunited.
They celebrate with campfire shenangians.
The sun comes up and "MORNIN' Y'ALL! Remember me? You tried to kill me! Well, sucks for you that I found you. You will be going to Capua to die in the gladiator arena and your wife will be sold into slavery! HAVE A GREAT LIFE, whatever is left of it anyways!" Damn, mondays suck.
But of course the Thracian rocks it in the arena, killing the 4 Gladiators that were meant to slay him and ending up the last man standing. The crowd loves him, so he gets the thumbs up and is sold to Lentulus Batiatus who owns a ludus of Gladiators. Batiatus is also giving him the name Spartacus, like the fierce Thracian king.
And that concludes the pilot episode.
Okay, yes, I will admit, the first season does start off rather slowly. It takes about 4-5 episodes to get really great. If you can survive on glistening abs and Lucy Lawless until then, I promise you will enjoy the rest of the season. It picks up pace and starts twisting and turning and scheming and plotting and it is gripping then.
And look at Lucy Lawless who plays Lucretia! LOOK! Flawless.
Because it is on Starz there is a lot of sex and nudity. There is swearing (examples here) and blood. So much blood.
What there is to watch so far:
Season 1: Spartacus; Blood and Sand
Prequel: Spartacus; Gods of the Arena
Season 2: Spartacus, Vengeance [has just started !!!!]
I would recommend to watch it in that order. The prequel has many of the characters from season 1 and they are set up there. They made the Prequel because after season 1, Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with cancer. They wanted to wait for his recovery to continue shooting. Sadly, the cancer returned shortly after and he withdrew from the series. He was replaced by Liam McIntyre. Andy Whitfield died last September, he was only 39. ;_;
Writers include Steven S. DeKnight and Brent Fletcher, who got very cool credentials. [Lost, Friday Night Lights, Buffy...] Produced by Sam Raimi.
