So, I dug through my PC to find as many old icons as I could, but I don't exactly know where they all go chronologically. I'll try my best.
So...I started making LJ icons in June of 2004 when I got my livejournal. As far as I can remember this is my first icon:
But before I made icons I made banners, like this one:
Anyway...my icons...
Early on I mostly used the techniques I'd learned making banners...the coloring tended to be pretty blah, and the text was mediocre. I also used a lot of brushes. I knew next-to-nothing about the sharpen tool, and I saved everything as .jpg.:
Originally, most of my icons were for icontests, hence the random fandoms.
But, seeing as to how it was my first real fandom, most of my early icons were "Gilmore Girls."
Somewhere along the line I started making really bad animated icons:
I haven't much improved in that area.
Umm...a lot of my earlier stuff was pretty brush heavy. I started using the font verdana obsessively:
Eventually I eased off the brushes. That was around the time that light textures were starting to gain popularity, but apparently, I was using them almost solely on "OC" icons.:
I went back to using some brushes, but I also tried to clear up my style a bit and develop some clarity in my icons:
Trend whore that I am, I followed the box craze:
And then I took a long break when my computer broke, and came back in the middle of the light textures:
But still improving clarity in my icons:
I was a big fan of light textures:
The 2004-2005 tv season came to a close, and with it a lot of the light texture craze died down:
I started using text a lot more in my icons:
I also fiddled around with saturation more:
I went back to using lots and lots of boxes:
Since then I've mostly been honing. I've experimented more with coloring, but I also do a lot in black and white:
A lot of the style in my icons has to do with clarity. I don't use a lot of brushes, and I don't use as many textures as I used to either. Mostly I work with gradients:
I guess that's all?
