I think it's more like white people who say they're for equal rights but resist giving up any of the privileges of being white.

Doesn't Iowa have full marriage equality? Is that in danger there?

But mostly I'm posting because I'm thrilled to find someone who knows how to use "effect" as a verb properly. Go You!

I feel the same way about gay rights. The pride parade in Chicago was this past weekend, and while I was busy entertaining future in-laws, I'm not 100% sure I would have made the effort to go even if I hadn't had anything planned. But, I wouldn't discount the power of quiet or behind-the-scenes advocacy. Voting is very powerful, and a pride parade isn't necessarily going to sway politicians any more than rallying friends to go to the polls or call their legislators. I guess that's the Amnesty letter writer in me :) That being said, I'm hoping that next year, I'll be available and muster the courage to go!
