Crap, does anyone actually still follow my livejournal? Well, if they are, then I'm sorry about this, haha. Feel free to ignore it. Hopefully putting it under a cut will make it less annoying in your subscriptions. (Oh god, the age of subscriptions, before the age of feeds. . .)

I decided to try reading my Nei Jing book and kind of stream-of-consciousness-ing the results, and hopefully I'll remember it? This is studying, right?

So I'm starting right at the beginning, so this is. . . CHAPTER 1

1.1 Huangdi tells Qibo, "Dude I'm such a great king and I love my peeps, so I'm gonna put down a compendium to easily summarize our medical knowledge so that people can continue to benefit from our kindness even after we're long dead. It's gonna be so organized and easy to understand and shit."

Points made here:
• Differentiate internal/external
• Decide starting/terminating points for Blood Circulation and Qi Flow
• Describe shapes of different kinds of needles
• Establish Canon of Acupuncture

1.2 Qibo says, "I'm down with that. Here's how we can organize it, then: I'm gonna break it down to nine Principles of Acupuncture." (I'm not entirely clear how to separate these principles, sorry. I'll just do my best to distill the essence of what he's saying.)

Points made here:
• Needle technique is easy to describe, but difficult to master.
• Ordinary doctors = Xing, excellent doctors = Shen.
-- • Excellent doctors pay attention to ZengQi/XieQi struggle at Channel entrances
• Key to acupuncture is in the rapid/slow needle manipulation.
• Qi has these to and fro kind of movements, and if you don't understand these movements you can mess things up by going against the grain.
-- • Receding = Ni (adverse); coming = Shun (due).

1.3 (I think this is still Qibo talking, though it doesn't specify.) "The general rule of acupuncture is [lists a bunch of opposing forces]."
• Reinforce Xu (Deficiency or Asthenia)
• Reduce Man (Excess or Sthenia)
• Remove Stagnation (of Qi and Blood)
• Attack Xie (Evil)

"The book DaYao, 'Essentials,' says that:"
• Slow insert, quick lift = Reinforce
• Quick insert, slow lift = Reduce

"Shi (Excess or Sthenia) means that there is Qi beneath the needle, and Xu (Deficiency or Asthenia) means that there is no Qi beneath the needle. When you insert the needle, you have to carefully pay attention to the to and fro of the Qi and Blood to decide how to needle."

1.4 "Essentials of Strengthening Xu and Reducing Shi lie in the application of the Nine Needles."
• Reinforce/Reduce with proper needling techniques.
-- • (Covers the Reinforce = slow insert quick lift, Reduce = quick insert slow lift from earlier).
-- • Reducing technique opens up the hole better, so it discharges Yang and eliminates Xie Qi (Evil Qi).
-- • Reinforce technique closes up the hole, so it prevents Qi from leaking and Zhong Qi (Middle Qi) is enriched.
--- • If Blood Stagnation, the needle should be removed immediately.

* Rules for holding the needle:
• Firm and straight
• Insert directly without deviation
• Concentrate mind on patient
• Avoid Vessels - if avoided, then there's no danger.
-- • Blood vessels run around Acupoints and "appear visible and hard when pressed."
• Carefully observe eyes and complexion of patient; inspect condition of Shen (Spirit) to really diagnose their problem well.

1.5 九針之名,各不同形。"The Nine Needles are different in name and shape." And then it lists the names and shapes of the nine needles, and what they do.
• ChanZhen (sagittate needle; arrow-shaped needle), 1.6 cun long
-- • Large head and sharp tip
-- • Reduce Yang Qi
• YuanZhen (round/pointed needle), 1.6 cun long
-- • Ovoid-shaped
-- • Press muscular interstices to reduce Qi without damaging muscles
• DiZhen (arrow-shaped needle), 3.5 cun long
-- • Sharp as minute millet
-- • Press channels to promote flow of Qi w/o penetrating into skin
• FengZhen (sharp needle), 1.6 cun long
-- • Triple-bladed
-- • Treat obstinate diseases
• PiZhen (sword-shaped needle), 4 cun long and 0.2 cun wide
-- • Sharp as a sword
-- • Remove pus
• YuanLiZhen (round-sharp needle), 1.6 cun long
-- • Like a piece of long hair that's round
-- • Sharp and Thick in the middle
-- • Treat acute diseases
• HaoZhen (filiform needle), 3.6 cun long
-- • Sharp as the mouth of a mosquito
-- • Pain and Bi Syndrome w/ light insert, mild thrust & lift
-- • Long retention of needle for invigorating Zheng Qi (Healthy Qi).
• ChangZhen (long needle), 7 cun long
-- • Sharp and thin
-- • Treat chronic Bi Syndrome
• DaZhen (large needle), 4 cun long
-- • Like a stick, slightly sharp and round
-- • Reduce retention of fluid in joints
