Chapter 1
Full Circle
“Please don’t do this.” Her voice is hoarse and raw, their earlier matches of screaming and yelling having taken it’s toll on her throat and he wonders if the words hurt as much it sounds.
It’s round 3 and they’re both tired.
They sit side by side at the foot of her bed, the mattress dipped dramatically because of the weight so close together and so close to the edge, but neither of them moves.
“Elizabeth…” His own voice is nearly painful in the heavy atmosphere in her quarters. She cuts him off with a shake of her head,
“But I love you, John. I love you.” She sniffles quietly, unlike their voices; the tears have not faded away. “Don’t you love me?” She doesn’t look at him when she asks him, he doesn’t blame her, instead her head hangs low and he gazes down too, staring down at her narrow, pale feet.
“More than anything.” He murmurs and is surprised by her laugh, harsh, loud and slightly hysterical in the quiet.
“No you don’t. Because if you loved me more than anything. If you loved me like I love you than you wouldn’t be doing this.” Shaking hands come up to wipe at hot, persistent tears and he turns his head to watch her in the near darkness.
He clears his throat, trying to clear the emotion from his voice. “Elizabeth, please…” his first words are still thick and broken with tears when they pass his lips and he swallows hard. “Please believe me. I love you so much.”
She just shakes her head, “Not enough.”
They sit in silence for a moment before he pushes himself to his feet and his first step falters at her soft crying. “It has to be this way, Elizabeth.” He whispers and she can’t believe that he’s the one saying these words to her, her words, her excuses that she’d thrown away for him. “It’s better for Atlantis.” He kneels in front of her, between her thighs on the hard floor and his large hands come up to cup her neck, his fingers meeting cold sweat on her skin.
“But I want this, I want you. I love you.” She hiccups and then he’s leaning forward until their foreheads meet and she squeezes her eyes shut while he watches her with his eyes wide open.
“The city has to come first, Elizabeth.” He says quietly and she just shakes her head while her fingers curl in the neck of his tee shirt until her knuckles are touching his collarbone. One hand moves up to slide into her hair, twisting tightly, guiding her head back and then his lips are sliding over hers and she exhales desperately. He does it again and this time she follows the movement blindly, leaning into him as their mouths meet, slow and hot, and he inhales sharply when she sobs brokenly against his parted lips.
He pulls away, sliding loose curls behind her ears, “Jesus, your so fucking beautiful.” He rasps softly, watching as she licks her lips and swallows before looking up at him with glassy green eyes.
“I would’ve given it up for you.” She murmurs and he shuts his eyes, pressing his lips to her hairline.
“Don’t Elizabeth, don’t.” he begs but she keeps talking, forces the words through the tightness in her chest.
“I would’ve given up Atlantis for you.”

“We’re supposed to be friends.” Rodney glances up from his work, startled, as John stalks into his lab. Swallowing slowly, Rodney leans back over the microscope, placing his eyes in the oculars.
“We are friends. That’s why I did it.” Rodney says quickly as he adjusts the microscope.
“Friends don’t threaten to report friends for fraternization.” John growls stepping up and turning off the power to the microscope.
“Damn it.” Rodney hisses sitting back from the microscope and straight up on his stool. “I know your upset…” Rodney begins and John stares at him incredulously.
“Upset?! I am fucking furious, Rodney. You made me end my relationship with the woman I love and you think I’m upset?!”
“I didn’t make you do anything! You ended it with Elizabeth because you know I’m right. That people would be a little upset with the leaders of Atlantis screwing each other in their free time!”
“Watch it McKay…” John growls as they stand nearly nose to nose in the center of the lab.
“It wasn’t right.” Rodney defends, stepping back, crossing his arms over his chest and John shakes his head.
“We weren’t hurting anyone. We weren’t hurting you.” John breathes and Rodney shakes his head.
“Her judgment would be biased; your decisions would become compromised.”
John laughs wryly, nodding slightly. “Well consider this decision completely uncompromised and without bias. We will continue to work together but you and I, McKay, are no longer friends.”
“John…” Rodney trails off in helpless disbelief.
“No Rodney, I love her. I love her and I just broke her heart. You made me do that.” He shouts and Rodney winces slightly.
“I-I didn’t know.”Rodney stutters as John walks towards the door and whooshes open before him.
“More like you didn’t care.” He tosses over his shoulder before walking out.
