Man, it was a narrow thing, yesterday. They finally made it across US183. We actually holed up in a safe house just east of I-35 and 12th St. We lost one man, but the National Guard pulled us out not long after midnight. Talk about humiliating, having to strip down and submit to a bite check before they'd let us in the personnel carrier! We're in the Greater Austin Area Refugee Center near Temple. It's got what they say is left of the population of Austin, about 50,000. We won't know the full effect till everyone who fled is located, but it's pretty bad. I'm not sure where you were, but a big swath of South Austin down MoPac had to be razed and burned to the ground. It'll play hell with the aquifer.

The good news is that this refugee area was designed by Austinites. We've got free WiFi, and the Live Oak Brewery survived so we're OK on beer. The Rolling Roadshow's playing here tonight, but I'm not sure whether I'll go to that or take in a show at one of the open-air stages. They're doing some sort of Zombie City Limits Festival this weekend; I've got a spare wristband if you're interested.

However, if you're of a mind to send a care package, we're about out of fresh lime juice and we're going to have to start using the concentrate stuff for margaritas soon. Also, could you see if Book People is still standing?

Much love,
Rowan
