Straw baby sweets.

My step-grandfather (?) is Japanese and can't speak much English at all. I remember when I went to Japan and we all went to a Diner with American-style food, he pointed out a dessert that had strawberries on it and said "straw bebbie". We all roared with laughter and he loved having the ability to make us laugh. For the rest of our stay we found him pointing to strawberries in pictures or on menus and continuing to say what sounded very much like straw baby.

Earlier today amicablebitch posted a recipe for something she calls a dump cake (or crunch cake), which she also contributed to the community food_porn.

I wanted more than anything to make it, not even so much eat it. And I was craving Strawbabies all day. On my trip to the grocery store tonight I picked up the ingredients for my version. It definitely needs some improvement (mostly just more sugar/splenda) but it was very good for a girl that can't cook or bake at all.

I also have more ingredients, of course I always have to complicate even the simplest of things.
Her version was blueberry, which requires a lot less work. My next may just be bananas with chocolate cake or blueberry with white cake.

Strawberry Banana Crunch Cake
Ingredients:

1 box of cake mix
1/2 stick of butter
Enough fruit to fill a cake pan
Ice cream

I also chose to add whipped topping.

Apparently you also need some diet Coke. Cake-making can make you thirsty.

Wash and cut strawberries. Line up in bottom of pan, sprinkle one tablespoon of sugar on top.

Cut one whole banana and layer on strawberries.

Pour cake mix on top and spread evenly over fruit.

Add butter to top of cake mix.

Place in 350 degree oven for one hour.

Ta-da.

Strawberry banana crunch cake with vanilla ice cream.

Now of course you can use fake butter and Splenda instead. I think where I went wrong is I didn't put enough sugar on the strawberries, they ended up being a tiny bit bitter. But I did enjoy it, it was easy enough to do as well. I have issues with the concept of using margarine or any kind of fake butter, I'd rather use less of the real thing than ANY of the fake stuff. I've educated myself enough on how terrible it is for one's body and choose not to eat it. But I certainly understand where others may prefer it. Just spare me the lectures.

I only ate the tiniest little square of it because it's not Weight Watchers friendly.
I mostly did this as something fun to do. Thanks to Mary for the recipe.
