Character Name: Stephanie Brown
Series: Batgirl (third series)
Age: 19-20
From When?: The very end of the series, pre-New 52

Inmate/Warden: Warden, for the chance to undo her past mistakes and create real change in people who need her help.
Item: Bat-shaped Pendant, like here.

Abilities/Powers: Stephanie is a self-made vigilante. From the very beginning she made her own costume, improvised her own gear, and trained herself. She’s the independent sort who can do just about anything she sets her mind to, and more than likely would prefer to do it on her own, thank you very much.
This self-determination has forced Steph to be a quick learner, especially when it comes to physical abilities, because if she doesn’t learn and adapt she could very easily be killed. When she really decides she will learn a skill, she generally learns it and excels at it.
As a gymnast, she’s very flexible and quick, which makes up for her relative lack of physical strength compared to the other Bats. She has a certain grace when she fights, and she never stops moving.
Steph’s biggest strength is her indomitable spirit. For all of the terrible things she has been through, she has pulled through and come out the other end all the stronger for it. Traumas that could have easily destroyed her only made her more determined to continue fighting the good fight.

Personality: Stephanie has spent most of her life stuck in the background, fighting her way into the foreground. She has a strange need to be a vigilante. She doesn't need a reason to help people; it's simply in her nature. Even in a foreign country while hiding from her past and without her costume or weapons, she did everything she could to help the people around her. Her indomitable spirit keeps her coming back every time she’s forced to quit. It is this indomitable spirit that has kept her around as Batgirl through to the very end, finally receiving the acceptance of those around her, past and present.

She’s had more than her share of hard times which have left her with a rather dry sense of humor and a willingness to lie and keep secrets to fulfill what she feels is her purpose. Every person she has ever counted as close to her has asked her to stop, and every time she promised and swore that she had. The secrets and broken promises leave her wracked with guilt, but not enough to try and fight who she is.

After years of being told she wasn’t skilled enough, or it was too dangerous, or she wasn’t needed, Stephanie has developed independence and a wisdom that allows her to work with others without getting close enough to put herself at risk. She is able to pull away from the things she wants long enough to realize what’s really important and proceed as necessary.

Her general attitude is snarky and stubborn. When she’s in a good mood, she can be quite cheery and optimistic, but it’s mostly a front. As a promise to her mom, she does her best to try and live a normal life. It usually doesn’t work. She doesn’t have a lot of friends, and thinks of college as an obligation to her mother rather than a worthwhile venture. She does, however, pay at least a little attention to her psychology class and tries to apply the lessons in her own life. This is her way of dealing with her very complicated lifestyle and the treasure-trove of doubts and self-discoveries she undergoes while trying to find her place in the world. Only those closest to her see past the attitude and get an idea of what’s really going on underneath. Once the jig is up she usually gets a hold of herself.

All of the swinging from grappling hooks and beating up bad guys is rather frightening, and she always worries that she’s going to fall, or break something, or both, even after years of fighting crime. This shows that she has a real sense of adventure and lives for the thrill and danger. She also has enough experience that she is rarely particularly optimistic while in costume, but rather always on the lookout for criminals. She has, however, been known to be flirtatious at times, usually ending in an explosion. The newest detective on the police force seems to have caught her eye, to the point that she greeted him mid-air on the way to stop a super-villain. Better yet, it was a super-villain that she wasn't fully prepared to fight, with powers she wasn't aware her costume had been made immune to.

All in all, Stephanie is different from most heroes in that she’s a very ordinary girl who doesn’t want much from her life other than to do what she loves. Her internal monologue is constantly running, noting ironies and reminding herself of things she needs to do, people she’s bugged by, and homework she’s forgotten about. She gets pretty gloomy when left alone with her thoughts, but hides it like a true teenager; with lies, big smiles, and defensive remarks.
At the end of her series, Steph has gained new insight and a much more altruistic attitude. She no longer fights to seek approval (although she does appreciate it when she can get it), but rather fights for the people because they need her help. She also develops a more nurturing side and is willing to give up certain things to help others even outside of her duties as Batgirl. In the end, Stephanie becomes the teacher as well as the student. Although neither of them are as experienced as Barbara, Stephanie and Wendy (the new girl) adopt a teacher-student sort of team not dissimilar to that of some inmates and their wardens. Stephanie guides Wendy through her own experiences and helps her not to repeat the mistakes made in the past.

Although at this stage in her life Stephanie is no longer hanging on the words of boys or idols, it has been shown that she still has an interest in romance. However, this may be for another reason: In a dream meant to be so appealing as to make her want to sleep forever, Stephanie is once more a mother as well as a vigilante fighting side by side with her teammates. Family has always been a hot issue for Stephanie because of her own past and her sensitivity towards the needs of children. Now, rather than just the enjoyment of a romantic relationship, Stephanie has an interest in starting a real family. This desire contributes to her willingness to help people who tend to upset her (i.e. Damian and Wendy) and her stubbornness when it comes to the Bat Family. She wants a real family, but the guise of one will do for now.

Sample Journal Entry:
[ She’s not just late. She’s months late. And boy have things changed in those months. ]

Hey! Um, I just want to start off by saying that this was totally not my plan. And I’m not entirely sure how long I’ve been gone, but the school semester is over and I have no clue what happened or why.

Other than that… I’m back! Yay?

[ Private to Friends ]
What’ve I missed?

[ Private to Dally ]
I’m sosososososo sorry. Are you alright? Do you have a new warden now?

[ Public Again ]
Oh, right, and anybody who doesn’t know me, I’m Steph, I kick butt, and I make delicious waffles.

Sample RP:

The guilt was crushing. She hadn’t done anything wrong. She had done her best to take care of the inmates she was given, she even thought she had made some progress. But once more, she had made promises she couldn’t keep, and this time they had been broken for her.

Those were the thoughts running through her head as Stephanie pummeled the punching bag in the gym. She was waiting for Blonsky to show up so she could say hi in person, but she could use the outlet for her frustrations. By now she knew that there was little point in hiding her secret identity or her skills. She showed the punching bag no mercy.

It was the Admiral’s fault, of course. But that didn’t make it okay. So many friends abandoned, so many people who couldn’t afford to lose someone else… it was cruel. Thinking about it only made her more upset. A lot of good things had happened back home, as well as a lot of bad things, and when it came down to it she was a better, happier person for the trip. But it wasn’t a trip she had planned on taking. For once she had made a promise she had every intention of keeping: a promise to stay. Not to give up. And here she was, only remembering the promise in time to learn that she had already broken it.

Her thoughts were only mildly interrupted when the punching bag came clean off of its stand and landed with a loud thump on the floor. With a huff Stephanie leaned down to pick it up and put the thing back together. Her anger was completely misplaced, of course. Some might not forgive her, but like it or not it wasn’t her fault. It wasn’t within her power to choose when she came and went from this place.

Hanging the bag back on its stand, she was filled with a familiar sense of determination. The Admiral was to blame. One man (if he even was a man) was responsible for so much suffering. A lot of joy, too, which she wouldn’t begrudge anyone on board. With all of the horrible things that happened here every single inhabitant deserved what happiness they could find. But there were a lot of people on the barge who, no matter how wretched their crimes, didn’t deserve to be put through this sort of torture. One thing hadn’t changed: It was still Stephanie’s mission to free as many people as she could, however she could.
