[Lol nope, sorry Steph, someone is already there with two sets of practice sticks - Bats are always prepared for this kind of thing apparently. You'll get to try out the real ones later. The environment's back to being a normal, deciduous forest, but Dick managed to find a pretty open clearing with enough room for them to move around in without crashing into things. It's almost like an above ground, out in the open cave! >>;]
[He grins and tosses her the other set of sticks, knowing she'll be able to catch them since she's Spoiler Robin Spoiler Batgirl, before picking up his own. They're a little lighter then his actual for-combat sticks, because he seriously doesn't want to break anything right off the bat.]
So, you've seriously never done anything with this kind of weapon before?
[Dick gives her a sort of weird look for a moment.] That's... kind of depressing, Steph.
Right, so... [Getting down to business. He picks up his own sticks, which feels... kinda awesome, even if they're just practice ones. He sort of hadn't realized he'd been going a little stir crazy until just now. It was really hard to believe it had almost been a month since he'd actually done any real work, and without bad guys to rough up, he was getting bored.] Escrima started out in the Philippines as a way for villagers to defend themselves against rival villages, and the moves are supposed to be simple, effective, but brutal. That doesn't mean it's going to be easy to learn, but you'll get the hang of it.
These sticks - [And he spun one in his hand to make his point, yes he's a little bit of a show off.] Are basically supposed to be an extension of your body. We'll tackle bare handed stuff later, once you've mastered using weapons. The point is to keep both hands busy and never moving them in the same direction so basically you'll be
( ... )
[ She just shrugs at his comment. She started out on her own. It was lucky she got any training at all, especially considering how Batman felt about her initially. She nods along with everything he says, thinking how "simple but brutal" was already so much her style. ]
Yeah, I'm with you. You know hand to hand is my specialty, right?
This really isn't all that different. Again, the sticks are supposed to be extensions of your body, not foreign objects you're just spinning around for the heck of it. The footwork is pretty much the same whether you're armed or not, and it's not like when you're actually fighting you're going to or should have to stick to just relying on this. I've still got karate and capoeria as major components to my fighting technique.
[He shifted his stance, no longer spinning the sticks, but instead gripping them in preparation for striking.] I'm gonna walk you through a couple drills to get you used to using the sticks. These are just practice ones. Once you can handle it, I'll ask the admiral to give us a pair like the ones I use on the job. These hopefully won't break bone, unless you've suddenly developed superpowers I don't know anything about.
Geez Steph, you know if you have a problem with me, you can just come and talk to me about it, no need for breaking bones. [He's so teasing.]
I meant while we're sparring, the worst they'll hopefully do is leave some pretty nasty bruises. You can still beat the crap out of someone with them if you want to, the wood they're made out of is pretty splinter proof. My real ones are made out of unshatterable polymer, and they tend to hit a little harder.

Never. I've never been trained by the same person long enough to get any real variety.
