day 4: a glimmer of hope...

May 24, 2009 23:59

so we 'punted' our day of chasing today, so to speak (for some reason people like sports metaphors) in favor of driving all the way down to liberal, kansas (on the kansas-oklahoma state line). why, you ask? because as we were heading to northwest nebraska/wyoming/south dakota, the models for tomorrow in texas took a nice turn for the better - shear, helicity, and cape all look like they're adding up with fairly low (but certainly existant) lcls. everything is there for some supercells to fire, the chance looks even better for a volatile weather day on tuesday, and best of all, the models are still in agreement about it all. hopefully it will all hold up till the morning, and we're getting out of here soon as possible to haul ass to texas to catch something good.

if all goes well i will have some videos and pictures for everyone :]

looks like we're on project vortex's tail - i spoke to a clerk at a convenience store in oakley who said that the whole team came through that same place not 4 hours before we showed up, which is reassuring. of course, much of the discussion in the cars and at dinner centered around silly things to do to the vortex team - not that we'd really do - just joking around in the spirit of competition - including a fake roadblock so we got to see something they couldnt get to, stealing a piece of the tiv, carjacking the tiv, and leaving various things on the tiv (favorite items included a virginia tech sticker, a 'male escort service - honk for a free sample' sticker, and one of my classic rock shirts). in all seriousness it would be really neat to run into the team and even cooler if they would stick around to talk a minute about anything, really, to us.

the decision to come down here was great - it took an hour of talking between us, but the area we decided to leave behind didn't really have any significant storms. this is the first real potential we've seen, it may be the last, and i am super excited for the next few days.
