I mentioned in a comment of my last post that I had recently joined MotM, Match of the Millenium (MUCK). And I mentioned that I was going to discuss why I decided to join it and what my thoughts are so far ( Read more... )

Well, I think the reason has to do with them not wanting someone to be able to sit around and parse enough data to crack the formulas by being able to see all of the details of both sides of the attacks/reactions. In normal combat you only see non-numeric information at best, so all of the math behind the system is obfuscated just enough to keep you from figuring out the formulas too much.

Granted, someone that wants to power game the combat system so bad that they're willing to sit around and crack the formulas is probably a waste of time player in general, since they're missing the point, but it's not like there aren't people like that anyway. ;)

So I understand the reasoning behind it, though I guess it's just another one of those things where the place seems to take itself *TOO* serious, which is ironic, because a lot of the RP samples I've skimmed through seem to stray more on the fluffy side of things from my perspective.

I do believe someone attacked themselves for like 4 hours or something one time and invoked the ire of the staff.

I always thought, like, with a combat system like this, it would be interesting to create one which evaluated how long the pose was, and maybe you could create a dictionary that assigned certain points to certain words and it would evaluate them that way and add an edge or a disadvantage to you in battle. Maybe even categorize words, and then have a prop which decides which word set suites your character more, a serious character wouldn't be like DUDE! AWESOME!, but a teenager might. Have the player say what they feel their characters archetype is on-app out of a list. This would also give more importance to the 'example pose' on most apps, too.

I think when it comes to a combat 'system', I'd prefer something that isn't subjective. It's already a stretch for some to accept a combat system in the first place, but then to try and explain that some program will be evaluating the 'quality' of their pose would probably be more than most people would be willing to swallow.

Hrm, I guess that's true. Maybe it could be implemented as bonuses or something, though, on top of a more normal system.

And yeah, personally, I'm not a big fan of really any combat systems on MU*s. If I really wanted a combat system, I'd play a mud.

You remember when there used to be a three-second lag between typing 'attack' and seeing the results of the attack? If we implemented a pose analyzer, it'd bring that delay back.

And people would still complain if they missed a 95% block after a mile-long pose. And it'd also be subject to abuse once people started saying 'awesome' every other word. So... it's probably not very helpful in the long run, where pose quality is concerned. You seem to be more concerned with poses than combat system -- this kind of system would hurt it.

Huh? I'm not saying impliment it on MOTM. Just as an idea for a combat system in general. I wouldn't change the combat system at MOTM. It is what it is.
