Top 10 Video games to play... with a twist

Apr 19, 2006 13:57

Even I can update from time to time. The meme'age going around about games caught my eye and interested me enough dust this LJ off and make with the posting. I'm posting this from the perspective of someone who works with large groups of people to make video games. I also happen to be someone who often disagrees with how said games are being made. 1) That is an interesting point! Most games you take something like the
Gunther incident for granted. In DX, it was irritating!

Although I'm still mad that I can't kill people by dropping metal crates
on their heads from rooftops...

6) That's a good point too. "Edit" teams kinda spoiled people - 94 made you
learn different styles of play to make the most of your team, which in turn
increased your skill and ability to compete *against* other styles of play.

7) I think you're right about that - SL being the closest graphical equiv
to MU*ing so far. Since it seems to be best known for porn and furries. ;)
I'd really like to see something like that either retailed or open-sourced
out as a server package available to the public though.

I STILL can't understand WTF mmo makers don't do that! They'd make a damn
fortune on TOP of the money they're making already.

9) A-MEN. That's what made it a Superior FF game for story - it wasn't
hamstrung by not being able to mess with the characters much.

1) Yeah. Almost everyone I discuss the game brings up that encounter with bile in their voice. But I kinda think it's funny, because that sort of situation is the /default/ in most games. All the same, I wonder if the DX team could have come up with an alternative way for you to end up back at the base without your gear besides forcing you to lose that encounter ( ... )

I don't know. EVENTUALLY, perhaps, but eventually is a long way
away, from the stubbornheadedness of the developers and publishers.

Look at Ragnarok and Ultima Online. There are HUNDREDS, if not
thousands of private servers out there, for two seperate games that
are very ancient by industry-cycle standards. UO I think isn't even
in operation anymore, and iRO I can't imagine is generating much
profit comparatively, and they STILL won't do it.

If EA sold private server code to UO, it wouldn't hurt them a bit -
it's not a viable property anymore for them. They could put it out
for chumpchange, and STILL make a killing, since it'd be the only
really 100% accurate server software available. But they won't do
it.

Some kind of substantial swing-shift is going to have to take place
to loosen their sphincters first, I suppose. =/ Maybe if some
rogue company takes a chance and gets critical acclaim and awesome
profits from it.

Yeah, I've been considering giving that game a looksee myself.
Definitely a completely different approach that hasn't gotten a ton of press in a lot of gaming circles. I'm thinking most gamers don't really know what to make of it. :D

The design comments are both intriguing and true. :D If you look at game development as foundational, makes you wonder what the next generation will bring. :D

FFIV is my favorite of the FF series. It's one of the best developed plots, paces well, and *mild spoiler alert* it's one of the few games I've ever played that's NOT afraid to dust members of your party sporadically in order to drive the story and Cecil's motivation. Golbez remains one of the few video game villians I have verbally sworn personal vengence upon while playing.
