(this is just me gushing about some game for awhile, so feel free to skip this post lol)
Why did I wait so long to just get this game? It is so much fun. I have probably used my DS more in the last week and a half than I have in the 3 or so years I've owned it until now. It's like an action RPG, I think, and it makes creative use of a bunch of different touchscreen gestures that change as often as you want. I like this a lot because it stays interesting and challenging when there's so many different ways to battle the monsters...you can do slashing things, or tapping things, or draw lines and circles, or even yell/blow into the microphone to do various kinds of damage. The pins that enable these actions end up being kind of like Pokemon: you feel awfully compelled to collect them all, and certain pins can evolve into other pins through three kinds of experience points.
The game really encourages spreading your play out across your daily life, instead of spending large chunks of time on the game at one time. It's not supposed to be easy to do well if you try to just blaze through many consecutive hours, because you can only upgrade your characters so much in a calendar day, and it actually rewards you for shutting the game off as well. One could easily spend 3 weeks or a month enjoying this if he or she only played a little each day.
I also am terribly charmed by the whole shopping aspect, which involves buying clothes and food for your characters, but also spending money to make friends with the shopkeepers so you can get special attributes for your clothes. More than half of the clothes are for girls though, so it's really likely that the guy characters will end up needing to cross-dress to get the best attributes. It's all so cute though!
I can't really remember the last time I really enjoyed everything about playing a game...even games that I count as favorites include some pretty boring, repetitive stuff for the leveling, but the grinding aspect of this is actually fun because it's challenging and changes all the time, especially with the dual screen gameplay. It's kind of hard to keep up with the button presses for the top screen and the stylus action on the bottom, even with practice. The only thing I don't like about it is the sort of lame story, which seems a bit thin and slow, and doesn't tell us a whole lot about its characters. At least it mostly allows for wandering around and doing whatever even with the "time limits" for the missions.
I don't necessarily think it's the best game ever, but I do find that it appeals to almost everything I want or need in a game, and I'm getting a lot of fun out of it. It's kind of too bad that I of course decided to get it after everyone is waaayy over this but eh.
