“Papa! I’m getting hungry and Oakley said… Why is your foot touching the wall?”
Sanji looked down at Olive without moving his head, eyes snapping back to their former spot in an instant. He really had no idea how to explain to his young daughter why his foot was firmly planted three feet up the wall, but he tried to come up with an excuse. “Olive, honey, go get your Daddy. Papa found one of those things again and he needs Daddy to take care of it,” he whispered. “And Papa needs Daddy right now.”
He neglected to tell her how the creature- a decently sized spider to him- had escaped him stomping on the wall and somehow managed to crawl on his leg. The spider was slowly inching its way up his pants leg, stopped to perch on his kneecap. It left him completely immobile, barely able to speak, and stricken with a terror he never experienced in his own home.
Olive, bright blue eyes shining as she spotted the spider, made a sort of delighted gasp at the sight. “Whoa-ha! What did you find, Papa?” she asked, moving a bit closer for a better look. “Is that a spider? Where did it come from?”
“No, no! Don’t come any closer Olive! Papa doesn’t want you to touch it because it’s a bad bug!” he exclaimed. “Just go get Daddy!”
“Aww, but I wanna see it,” Olive pouted, turning to run out of the room and calling for Usopp. “Daddy! Papa needs your help!”
Sanji tried to calm himself as the spider started moving again, breathing through his nose. He counted in his head while waiting for some kind of help. ‘One… two… where the hell is he?!’
After what seemed like forever, Usopp seemed to appear in parts with his eyes narrowed and lips curled upward as he slowly walked through the doorway and looked at him. “Olive told me you’ve found a new pet,” he said.
“You know damn well this isn’t funny,” Sanji whispered, voice bordering on a whimper. He hoped the children hadn’t followed behind Usopp because of his language, his eyes still not leaving his knee. “Get rid of it. Get rid of it now.”
“Aww, Papa’s terrified of something smaller than a coin,” Usopp chuckled. “Olive! Oakley! Come help Daddy defend Papa against the big, bad spider!”
Sanji wasn’t humored by his pity- or maybe sarcasm- but he didn’t argue as Usopp moved in and gave him a kiss before Olive ran in. “Oakley says he doesn’t want to help since it’s a spider,” she said. “Daddy, what can I do?”
Usopp pat her on the head and grinned as he reached for a scrap piece of paper. “Keep Papa busy while I take care of the spider,” he said.
Olive nodded and grabbed Sanji’s hand, which hung limply at his side, and latched onto his fingers with both hands as she talked. ‘Papa, it’ll be OK. Daddy’s here now and can help get rid of the spider,” she said.
“Oh, good. Thank you Olive,” Sanji said, a little fear in his voice as Usopp accidentally scooted the spider a little closer to him. “Tell me, where is Oakley?”
“Peeking around the corner,” Olive said, pointing to the spot in the doorframe where her younger brother stood mostly hidden behind the wall.
Usopp carefully walked to the window with the spider balanced on his paper, opened the screen and gently placed it outside before closing everything and preventing the creature from coming back. “The scary spider is gone!” he smirked. “Daddy saved Papa once again.”
Olive- and Oakley after he deemed it safe again- ran to their dark haired parent and cheered while Sanji lowered his leg and took a moment to breathe. He watched Usopp bend down to scoop both children off the ground and turn to grin at him. It made Sanji smile back, his teeth showing when a thought crossed his mind. “Thank you for saving me. I think you deserve some kind of reward,” he grinned.
Usopp blushed a bit as he smiled at him, moving closer as Sanji leaned in. Olive and Oakley buried their faces against Usopp’s shoulders as their parents’ lips touched, both making little noises of slight discomfort while Sanji and Usopp laughed.
“Stay away from spiders for a while, alright?” Usopp joked lightly.
“Oh, trust me. The closest I’m getting to another one of those things is as far as humanly possible.”
“Daddy, why is Papa afraid of spiders?”
“Is it because they’re gross?”
“Is it because Oakley doesn’t like them?”
“No, no, I don’t know why Papa doesn’t like spiders. But, he’s got us to protect him, right?”
Sanji chuckled as Olive and Oakley agreed, more so on Olive’s part, and he leaned in to give them both a kiss on their forehead.
