Kuchiki Mansion…Soul Society
Although he was a man dedicated to duty, Kuchiki Byakuya would admit to himself at least that he really disliked paperwork. He especially disliked the difficult to decipher, child-like scribbles of his incompetent vice-captain. The only way he could get through the various reports Renji submitted was to amuse himself by making copious corrections and snide comments on the things. Then he would send them back to Renji and force him to re-write them all. Of course, he never read the corrections, which drove Renji insane, which was, naturally, the point.
Byakuya was writing another comment on the margins of Renji’s latest report, questioning the vice-captain’s intelligence, when a death butterfly appeared at his office window. It was a familiar sight. Since he didn’t trust Renji to tell him anything important where Rukia was concerned, he had dispatched the little butterfly to keep an eye on his sister. She made it very difficult for him to keep his promise to Hisana to keep her safe by constantly running about and getting into sword fights and such. He found it quite irritating.
With a sigh, he put down his pen and held his hand out to the butterfly. It flitted to his finger and rested, its wings twitching nervously. He raised an elegant eyebrow at its unease. Obviously something was wrong. The butterfly dithered for a moment, telling him useless things about the weather or Rukia’s recent purchase of something called a “Chappy” stuffed toy. He raised his other eyebrow and frowned down at the nervous little bug. Its wings twitched again.
Moments later, a wave of intense anger swept through the Shinigami Court, stopping everyone in their tracks. And moments after that…
The door to Byakuya’s office slammed open so hard it bounced in its tracks. The Kuchiki family butler, who had been cowering nearby, jumped and scuttled over to the doorway where his master stood, looking as calm as ever, even though there was an almost palpable menace to him.
“Get me Captain Ukitake.” He said through clenched teeth. “And my sword.”
