Kyuhyun grew up on the wrong side of the tracks.

His father left when he was born, or some time soon after; his mother worked 2 jobs. There was no chance of a college education for him, not only did he not have the money to go, he couldnt leave his broken home and his mother.

Kyuhyun dressed like his social class did: jeans with holes, shirts either too large or too small, often times with holes in them as well. His hair was never styled like the kids in the middle clas and up; he never paid too much attention to his appearance anyway.

No girls noticed Kyuhyun. Or, if they did, it wasnt for a good reason. Much like the time his buddy, Kibum, in an act of not thinking it through, pulled out his switchblade in science class when the little knife he and his female partner had didnt cut. His partner gasped and slapped him, running to the teacher and effectively giving Kibum a complete week of detention.

People noticed kids like Kyuhyun and Kibum only when they loitered around a store or spent too much time looking at an item. They noticed when they thought they were up to something, but never any other time.

Kyuhyun had been in jail before. Once for petty theft and twice for assult, both being short stays. He had stolen bread from a local grocery store when his mother was fired from a job and could afford food that week. One night, his mother came home in tears, her clothes torn, almost off her body, and her body covered with marks. Kyuhyun got a discription of the man form her and went out, after she'd gone asleep. The cops were called and he was made to look at fault. The second time, the new kid at school, a small build lad by the name of Henry and new neighbor of his, was being picked on, rather roughly, by the neighborhood jetset. Kyuhyun stepped in and got a black eye, a fat lip and two weeks in prison.

Unlike his friend Heechul who had gone in and out of jail like it was his home. Heechul's father was a horrible man, the marks on Heechul's fair skin told so, and his mother was an alcpholic who had forgotten who Heechul was. Heechul wasnt a bad person, he just did what he had to do to stay alive. Every time something happened in the neighborhood, stolen goods, a bar fight, murder or rape, which Kyuhyun thought was rediculous because Heechul couldnt hurt a fly, they found Heechul. „Man,“ Heechul grinned, looking at Kyuhyun with his fox-like eyes. „those cops know me by now. They love me.“

One night, Kyuhyun found himself walking aimlessly through the streets. Streetlights were already on, a sign it was getting late, but he didnt want to go home. Not tonight.

It had rained, but the sky was clear now, littered with stars.

Stuffing his hands into his jeans' pockets, Kyuhyun continued forward on the sidewalk, ignoring the hard stares he got from the store owners as he passed. He got those looks all the time, so he was almost immune. He'd probably be getting those same looks until the day he was burried, and even then the priest would wonder if he had somehow stolen the holyness of the church or some other rediculous thing.

„Yah! Go away!! Leave me alone!!“

Automatically, Kyuhyun turned into the alley from which the voice had come from. Not too deep into the alley were four men - one backed into the brick wall that was the side of a gas station building, the other three surrounding him. He was dressed nicely, in pants with no holes and a white collared shirt and red tie, the other three dressed simularly as Kyuhyun.

„Hey!“

the attentions of all the men in front of him were then focused on him. The boy backed into the wall looked like he had just seen a savior, but then must have got a good look at Kyuhyun. The other three looked annoyed.

„beat it, kid,“ one said, „we dont have time to deal with the likes of you.“

Kyuhyun chuckled. „'the likes of me?'“ he repeated, watching the man's eyebrow twitch with annoyance. „Dont make me laugh! You scums are just like me.“

One of the men, the one closest to Kyuhyun, lunged forward at him, ready to punch, but before he got the chance Kyuhyun grabbed a hold of his shirt collar and shoved in into the wall. Kyuhyun's dark eyes bore into the other's, his frown deep as he said, „Don't want to see no blood, dont be a macho man. Get out of here before i pound you all into oblivion.“

„Y-you said it yourself,“ the man said, trying to sound tough like Kyuhyun hadnt overpowered him. „You're just like us.“

„If you had gotten here first,“ one of the other men said, from the side. Kyuhyun's head turned to look at them. One still had a hold on the scared-but-well-dressed man, the other looking straight at Kyuhyun. „It would have been you who would have jumped this guy.“

Kyuhyun scoweled and shoved the man in his hold against the wall before socking the other male. Both fell to the ground quickly, and the other backed away from the boy. „Get out of here before i get mad,“ Kyuhyun told them, staring angrily at all of them for about a moment. „Now!“

the three scrambled to their feet and broke into a run.

Kyuhyun crossed his arms and watched them go, before walking out of the alley himself, leaving the other male to recollect himself and get to wherever he was going.

„Hey!“ a voice called, footsteps chasing after Kyuhyun. He sighed, turned and saw the boy from the alley. In the light of the street, Kyuhyun saw the mans bright eyes, the dirt on his cheek and his messy black-as-night hair. He saw the man's sharp features, from his nose to his jaw, then his lean body and figured he was kind of cute. In an awkward kind of way.

„What?“ Kyuhyun snapped, not really meaning to. He was so used to it that it just happens. The man jerked like Kyuhyun's words had burned him and he absently begun to adjust his clothing.

„I just wanted,“ he said through some accent Kyuhyun couldnt place, „to thank you.“

Kyuhyun turned and contunued walking. „Don't. They are probably right.“

To some dismay, Kyuhyun heart footsteps again. „About what?“

„About me,“ he said plainly. He continued to walk, not caring if the other caught up or not. „I probably would have jumped you. You're on the wrong side of town, kid.“

„Yeah,“ he said sheepishly. „I took a wrong turn.“

„No shit.“

It was silent for a while, but kyuhyun knew the other was still there by the footfalls behind him.

„Whats your name?“ the boy asked, his voice soft and shy. It, for some reason, mad Kyuhyun's heart jolt, and for that he got annoyed.

„Whats yours?“ Kyuhyun snapped, fiercely.

The other opened his mouth and said softly, „Zhou Mi.“

Kyuhyun sighed and knew he couldnt be mad at Zhou Mi. it didnt make sense to him, but it was late, he was tired and he didnt know Zhou Mi at all. „Go home Zhou Mi.“

Days passed in the norm. Nothing happened in the town, and Kyuhyun hadnt seen Zhou Mi since that night. He was grateful; he had other things to deal with.

„Yah!! Old man!!“ Kyuhyun shouted, banging on the old door of Heechul's house. After a short moment, Kyuhyun kicked the door in and entered, the smell of cigarettes and alcohol sickingly strong in the house. Kyuhyun ignored the stench and barged into the house, looking for Heechul's father.

He found the man in the living room, knocking back drinks and smoking.

„Whats the meaning of this?“ he asked when he saw Kyuhyun.

Kyuhyun grinded his teeth, trying to hold back on hitting the pathetic man, but giving up on that. His fist made solid contact on the man's cheek, sending him falling ungracfully to the ground. He grabbed the man by the front of his shirt and lifted him with no effort and glared into his eyes. „What the fuck gives you the right...?!“

the man smirked. „He's my brat. I can do what i want - “ Kyuhyun, in a fit of rage, threw the man into the glass coffee table, shattering it.

„You have no right,“ Kyuhyun said through gritted teeth. „Not you and not your bitch. Never lay your filthy hands on him again. Or i'll do worse than this.“

Kyuhyun left the house, not bothering to hide the anger from his face. His fists were clenched and the looks he got from store owners and even pedestrians were worse than they'd be otherwise.

A hand on his shoulder made Kyuhyun turn around, ready to punch whoever it was, but stopping short when he saw that Zhou Mi kid. „What happened?“ he asked, like they had been friends forever.

Kyuhyun glared at him and brushed off the other's hand. „Nothing.“

„Your hand is bleeding,“ Zhou Mi pointed out before grabbing Kyuhyun's arm and leading him into a diner. He sat Kyuhyun down and asked the waitress for some towels and maybe disinfectant if they had it.

„What did you do?“ Zhou Mi asked, examining the other's hand closely. Kyuhyun was staring hard out the window, not paying attention to the boy in front of him. At least, not until he felt something cool on his hand and a sharp sting.

„Ow!“ he shouted, trying to withdrawl his hand from Zhou Mi's grip, but the other took it back, looking at him sharply. „What the hell?!“

Zhou Mi sighed and dabbed the paper towel plus disinfectant onto the cut on the other boy's somehow still light skin. „It'll get infected,“ he said matter-of-factly. „Hold still.“

„Ow!!“

„What happened?“ Zhou Mi asked again, watching Kyuhyun drink his Coke and ignoring his own.

Kyuhyun sighed. „its a long story.“ he said, hoping Zhou Mi would leave it at that. He turned and looked out the window besides their table, biting on the straw from his cheek.

„I've got time.“

Kyuhyun sighed. Not the answer he wanted. „my friend's father hits him,“ Kyuhyun said, „and i was just giving him a taste of his own medicine.“

Zhou Mi blinked, his black eyes large with surprise. „Oh.“

Kyuhyun looked back at the man in front of him, grinning. „See? I am bad.“

Zhou Mi stared at Kyuhyun for a moment, as if sizing him up. He looked over the boy, from his brown hair, to his matching eyes and the faint scar just under his left eye. Then he smiled and said, „maybe,“ Kyuhyun's eyebrow rose with some interest, „not so much.“

Kyuhyun rolled his eyes and Zhou Mi giggled.
