084. TEN movies/books you'd recommend and why.

1. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: (Book) Tolkien incorporates such imagery into his work, and I love the amount of time and description that he put into this one. Plus, I always tend to favor the last books of trilogies like this, because they tend to tie everything together.

2. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: (Movie) Frankly, I think Peter Jackson did an excellent job with the movies considering what he had to work with. I can be a purist sometimes, but there's a lot of stuff in the books that isn't necessarily relevant to the telling of the story, and Jackson did a great job with narrowing down what was necessary and what wasn't. This film is my favorite for the fight scenes though. The cinematography on all the films was fantastic, but the scene with Helm's Deep was really fantastic work.

3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: (Movie) It didn't stay as close to the book as some may have liked, but regardless it was a good film. The comedic timing was done well, and I enjoyed it. My sister was singing the damn dolphin song for weeks on end, but that's another story.

4. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: (Book) Douglas Adams is a genius. He has a dry wit, but it's not too dry that it'll go over every one's head. I've enjoyed all of the books in this series, but the first one is actually my favorite.

5. Glory: (Movie) Fantastic film. Denzel Washington deserved that Oscar, and Matthew Broderick didn't make me want to shoot myself. Also, the time they put into the film historically speaking was very evident, and while it wasn't perfect -- it wasn't completely off-base either, which I appreciate.

6. The History of the World: Part 1: (Movie) It's Mel Brooks.

7. Spaceballs: (Movie) Also see above. And Rick Moranis has always been a favorite of mine.

8. Star Wars: A New Hope: (Movie) I'm not exactly sure why this one is my favorite, but I'm not really fond of the other Star Wars films, aside from this one. To me, this one was the best.

9. Me Talk Pretty One Day: (Book) I've always loved David Sedaris' commentaries on NPR, so when I heard he had several collections of his work out, I picked them up. This one was the first one I read and by far my favorite. I consider it the collection of his best, and I especially love the way he writes about his family, and interesting situations they find themselves in.

10. Angels and Demons: (Book) I'm a Dan Brown fan, regardless, but in my opinion, they should have cast someone else to play Robert Langdon in The DaVinci Code, and they should have made this book first. It really sets up the whole story of whole Langdon is, and frankly, I think it's the better book. But that's just me.
