I spent Superbowl weekend in Starkville at Alicia & Daniel's place. The dinner she prepared the first night was really something:
This was a curried shrimp mixture on a sweet potato.
The flavors were unexpectedly complementary.
Soup! It was surprisingly spicy.
Alicia was kind enough not to add cilantro to mine.
Alicia was all about some king cake this year, so I phoned in an order and swung by Paul's on my way up so that I could guarantee not only the best king cakes, but the freshest!
If you've never seen a
king cake, you have a horrible life this is what one looks like.
They're traditionally served in the extreme South, especially New Orleans, during Mardi Gras and are fantastic.
Unless they're terrible. They're often terrible.
Yes, it really does contain a plastic baby. If you get the baby, you have to buy the next one.
Almonds are not a typical topping, but Paul's adds them because Paul's is awesome.
Paul's is THE place to buy king cakes in the state of Mississippi (and Alabama and most if not all of Louisiana).
Yes, that's a lot of sugar. There's also a cinnamon and cream cheese filling in this one.
The colors of Mardi Gras do have meaning, but that's usually only of interest to people
that don't have Mardi Gras where they live.
When I saw Paul's was offering specialty superbowl cakes, I knew I had to get one.
It came complete with cheap plastic decorations!
This was the berry deluxe filling that had four different berry fillings.
People seemed very excited to have not-scary king cake at the superbowl party.
