QOTD: "Write a wise saying and your name will live forever." -Anonymous
I'm very excited. Today I went looking for the batteries for the Nikon F3 High-Eyepoint camera I found while sorting through the boxes of stowed (hidden) photo equipment that were dredged up from the studios during recarpeting two weeks ago. I was terribly excited to find the camera, as it had the smooth pressure plate that I require for infrared photography. More than that, it also lacks a film cartridge window and it's fully manual. It is, in short, ideal in construction. It is also chock full of interesting features including, but not limited to, a fully removable pentaprism eyepiece assembly, interchangeable focusing screens, manual eyepiece shutter, sync port (!!), removable flash hotshoe (wtf?) over the film reel (WTF?), timer with countdown light, and manual backup shutter release. In the world of old school, this camera is the shit.
Anyway, I installed the batteries, and the camera didn't work. I read the manual (again) and found I'd installed them incorrectly, so I fixed that and the shutter tripped properly for the first time in who knows how long. I actually cheered. I'm still finding all kinds of new things even though I've been playing with it for two weeks. I really should be more cautious and run a test roll through the camera first to check for light leaks, but I think I'm going to charge ahead and order some infrared Rollei to give the camera a run with. Very, very exciting. I also need to find an appropriate filter to use. I've got a hunch that the red filter I got for the last camera I used for infrared will fit the lens that was on this camera. Now if I can only find my filter pouch... hmm.
I've been shopping on B&H and digitaltruth tonight and boy, I could drop some serious cash on photo things. I discovered that Agfa Sistan can be used as a wetting agent in place of Kodak PhotoFlo and that just completely blew my mind. I immediately started pricing. I want to get ahold of some of some of Rollei's infrared (as I mentioned earlier), but I've learned that Efke's infrared is the same as the Maco IR820 that I used before. I got good results with it, but I think they added an anti-halation layer, which is kind of a bummer. Still wish I could get my hands on some Kodak HIE, but I've pretty much given in to the fact that I'll never get any. Sad for me. But I'm excited about the stuff I have, and I hope I can start shooting more in the near future, finances permitting. The roll of film Gabe developed while he was here had really nice grain (he did a good job) and it's gotten me excited about the Rodinal that's now open. It's always been my favorite developer (out of the whopping three I've used) and it's great to have a supply again. Now if I could only come up with something to photograph...
